At Connections BodyMind, PA, we know that all diseases have emotional and physical components because we know one cannot function without affecting the other. Physical and mental health cannot be separated, they are completely intertwined. To become healthy, we must acknowledge that mental health and happiness are required for HEALTH of any kind. This perspective sets us apart from many other clinics. We treat the whole person, not one organ or system, not one piece or part at a time. We don't ignore the physical or emotional symptoms our clients experience. It is not surprising to us that people who come to us for counseling end up healing many physical problems too.
Our perspective is similar to that of traditional Chinese and Indian Medicine. We acknowledge that there are subtle energies in the body that must flow properly for each organ and system to function well. When these energies are not flowing freely, certain types of diseases begin to manifest. Understanding these subtle energy relationships is very useful to us as we assess the problems our clients are experiencing.
Emotions and Physical Illness
There are strong correlations between specific emotions and the functions of certain organ systems that have been observed and documented by Chinese, Indian and other indigenous medical systems since ancient times.
Some examples to consider:
- The relationship between lungs and grief may yield chronic respiratory infections, asthma, sinus problems, and breathing problem in addition to the usual emotional symptoms for people suffering from grief and loss.
- The relationship between the liver and anger can yield problems metabolizing fats leading to excess bile and stomach or esophageal burning, inadequate bile to digest foods leading to malnutrition, gall stones, obesity, or alcohol dependencies for people suffering from chronic anger.
- The relationship between the kidneys and fear can lead to urinary tract problems, diseases of the kidneys, kidney stones, adrenal excess or exhaustion diminishing the ability to cope with stress, other hormone disruptions leading to infertility, ED, high blood pressure or general inflammation or people suffering with chronic fear. Chronic fear really is deadly.
- The relationship of the pancreas and stomach to anxiety is probably the one most of us recognize. Everyone knows about butterflies in the stomach when anxious about an upcoming visit to the dentist but chronic anxiety leads to serious health risks; digestive problems of the stomach, indigestion, ulcers, metabolic problems related to insulin, diabetes, and addictions of every kind.
- The relationship between the heart and joy (or the lack, depression) is another one we all know. A broken heart is the very definition of depression. Depression is known to lower immunity, decrease focus, effectiveness, increase the incidence of accidents. Lack of joy actually causes heart disease, clogged veins and arteries, valves that wear out, ruptures and tears that are the heart literally breaking.
Further, each of the organs (together with its associated emotion), establish hierarchies of dominance to 'govern' the functions of other bodily systems (e.g., bones, blood, nerves, muscles, tendons and joints etc). When organs, emotions and subtle energies are disturbed, physical symptoms and disease appear throughout the body in very predictable ways.
Other medical traditions have recognized how crucial happiness and mental health are to the overall health of the human being. It can be argued that EVERY illness, even injuries, have emotional roots. If you want to be healthy, you cannot neglect your emotional well being.
